How to Play Single Deck Blackjack

The rules of single deck blackjack are exactly the same as any other regular form of blackjack. Ultimately, players (as always) try to get a score of 21 without going over and hope that the dealer is not able to beat this score. The only real difference is that the game is played with one deck (as the name already implies.)

What is the Single Deck Blackjack House Edge?

The house edge of single deck blackjack is said to be around 0.15% – which is extremely low! (Most multideck blackjack house edge is around 1.45%). Obviously, this low house edge comes with a few disadvantages. The first is that the payout for such games are somewhat lower than with other blackjack variations. Then, the second is that casinos generally don’t award all that many “comp” points for playing these games (this may be VIP points at an online casino.) The reason for this is the low house edge.

Finally, there is also the fact that not all that many land-based casinos offer single deck blackjack anymore. This is due to the fact that it is easy to count cards when playing this variation of the classic card game and casinos don’t like people cheating them.

Best Single Deck Blackjack Strategy

When playing single deck blackjack, we always recommend that players make use of basic strategy. Basic strategy is the most notable in blackjack. Players mathematically increase their odds when playing with this concept in mind. With regards to basic strategy with single deck games, keep the following in mind:

  • If you’re holding cards with a score between 8 and 11, and the dealer has a score between 5 and 9, you have to double down.
  • If you’re holding cards with a score between 12 and 16, and the dealer has got a hand with a low-score, we recommend that you stand.
  • Finally, if you have got a hand with a score between 17 and 21, always stand.

There are a few other aspects related to basic strategy. To learn more, we recommend that players have a look at our how to play blackjack page.

Why Play Single Deck Blackjack?

While there are notable disadvantages to playing single deck blackjack online, there is a very low house edge in the game. Some have suggested that it is possible to negate this advantage when playing other multihand blackjack variations that introduce more disadvantages for the dealer. With this in mind, maybe playing single deck blackjack isn’t always the best value for money in terms of online gambling. However, you can’t argue against that house edge!
